LIS 9870   Information Practices in Everyday Life

Course Description
This course explores the literature regarding the information practices of ordinary people in everyday life contexts, including the theoretical and methodological approaches used in such research. Topics considered include: patterns of everyday information practices; the social construction of information needs; the use of newspapers, radio, television, the Internet and other communication media to meet information needs; information behaviours arising from particular life situations such as parenting, employment, diversity or health concerns; barriers to information and information poverty; the public library and other institutional providers of information; studies of publishing and the book trade; and studies of readers and reading.
