Course Description
An overview of library services and materials for baby boomers and older adults. Information and reading practices will be critically examined, paralleling an evaluation of library materials dedicated to this age group. Collection development, reference and education services for older adults will be explored, including community partnerships and programming opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of readings, assignments, and class participation, students will be able to:
1. Both historically and contemporarily, critically identify and evaluate how older adults are portrayed in media and literature as well as in library policies, services and programming (PLLO 1, 2, 3, 7, 9);

2. Understand different physical, cognitive and social changes associated with the aging process and how these changes can influence access to library collections and services (PLLO 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9);

3. Identify the reading interests and information needs and practices of older adults (PLLO 1, 2, 8, 9);

4. Develop collections, programs and services to meet the unique needs and interests of older adults (PLLO 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9);

5. Identify, evaluate, select and provide access to library collections for older adults in a variety of formats and using a variety of assistive technologies (PLLO 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9).
