Course Description
This course covers the concepts of health and medicine and the organization of biomedical research and consumer health literature; information seeking by people with health concerns, issues in health communication; specialized vocabulary and forms of medical literature, organization of information services for health consumers and methods for evaluating them.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of readings, assignments, and class participation, students will be able to:
1. Analyze major problems related to meeting consumer health information needs in a spirit of creativity and critical inquiry (PLLO 1);
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of health and medicine and the organization of biomedical research and consumer health literature (PLLO 2);
3. Critically assess issues in formal and informal health communication and the role of the librarian in providing consumer health information (PLLO 4 and 5);
4. Identify, select, evaluate, organize, and provide access to recorded medical information in a variety of formats (PLLO 6);
5. Effectively use the specialized vocabulary and forms of medical and health literature to retrieve relevant material; (PLLO 6);
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the information seeking by people with health concerns and by health care practitioners;
7. Identify needs of ordinary people for health-related information and develop collections and services to meet these needs (PLLO 8).
