Internal Funding for 1YR Program

A funding support package is not guaranteed, however there may be financial support in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships for some students.

Funding Support Package for 2YR Program

All full-time Master of Health Information Science students in good academic standing will receive a funding package of $12,000 a year for up to two years (six terms). This package is normally composed of one term of Teaching Assistantship, each year, and Western Graduate Research Scholarship which is allocated in lump sum each term, for both years. International students are eligible to apply, and will receive a funding package as part of their offer of admission, but only one seat is available in the fall 2026 international MHIS 2 year cohort.

*External funding sources such as OGS/CGRS-M may affect the amount you are awarded on a year-to-year basis.

  • Above amounts are as of 2025/2026.
  • Total from Western is normally comprised of one term of Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) in the funded year, and Western Graduate Research Scholarship (WGRS) funds.
  • International students with no external scholarship receive Western Graduate Research Scholarship (WGRS) funds (additional $8,370 annually) to partially offset international tuition. This WGRS is not included in the above totals from Western.
  • Funding support packages can be comprised of funds from a variety of sources and can differ from student to student. Funding sources might include scholarships, graduate fellowships, and part-time employment such as graduate teaching assistantships or graduate student assistantships.

Additional Funding Sources

Eugenia Canas Memorial Award in Health Equity

Awarded annually to a student enrolled full-time in a graduate program in Health Information Science. Preference will be given to a student from an equity-deserving group and/or a student who is conducting research in health equity with a preference for students conducting research involving youth. A committee that includes the Health Information Science Program Chair, Associate Dean Graduate of FHS/FIMS (or their delegate), and at least one individual who is a faculty member with the Health Information Science Program and a member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will select recipients of the award. This award was established by a generous donation from Helene Berman & Mark Flink, Nadine Wathen & Family, and many generous friends of Eugenia Canas. Value: 1 at $1,500.

FIMS Dean's Entrance Award, Health Information Science

This scholarship is awarded to students entering full-time into the graduate program in Health Information Science based on excellent academic achievement (minimum of 80% average). The Dean of the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, in consultation with a committee that includes the Manager, Graduate Student Services and Health Information Science Program Coordinator, will select recipients of the award. At least one member of the committee will hold current membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Value: up to $5000 each.
