Course Requirements (2.0 Credits)
Health Information Science doctoral students are required to take a research methods course and elective courses.
The intent of the research methods course is to gain additional skills in type(s) of methodology a student may be planning to use in their thesis research.
Possibilities for elective courses are wide-ranging, as they span multiple programs and faculties.
Research Methods (0.5 Credits)
Completion of 0.5 credits from the Faculty of Health Sciences' PhD-level advanced research methods course or 0.5 credits from the Faculty of Information and Media Studies PhD-level advanced research methods courses.
This list includes the following courses:
- GRADLIS 9801 - ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS 1 (0.5 Credits)
- GRADLIS 9802 - ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS 2 (0.5 Credits)
- HEALTHSCI 9730 - PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH (0.5 Credits)
- HEALTHSCI 9788 - ADVANCED QUANTITATIVE DESIGN (0.5 Credits)
- FHS 9789 - EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS (0.5)
*Students will need approval from their advisor/supervisor AND the HIS Graduate Chair if they wish to take a research methods course not listed above to fulfill the HIS doctoral research methods requirement.
Electives (1.5 Credits)
Completion of 1.5 credits of elective courses offered by either the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Faculty of Information and Media Studies.
*Students will need approval from their advisor/supervisor AND the HIS Graduate Chair if they wish to take an elective offered by a faculty other than the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Faculty of Information and Media Studies.
