An overview of critlib, or critical approaches, to professional practice to advance social justice in LIS. Examination of critical perspectives and theory in LIS and the ways they inform policy and practice in areas such as cataloguing and classification, information literacy, information and user services, scholarly communication and open access, technology, and library administration.

Connecting People with Information
Upon successful completion of readings, assignments, and class participation, students will be able to:
1. Exhibit a broad understanding of contemporary and historical critiques of of major ideologies, movements, and trends within and external to library and information contexts through knowledge, critique, and presentation (PLLO 1, 2, 5, 9);
2. Understand the relationship between theory and practice in LIS and how to strengthen these ties to produce more ethical practice (PLLO 1, 2, 3);
3. Apply critical perspectives in areas of library and information practice such as critical information literacy, cataloguing and classification, archival arrangement and description, policy and management (PLLO 2, 3, 5).
4. Promote, advocate for, and lead progressive movements that align with the values and principles of LIS and demonstrate facility when speaking, reading, and presenting about them (PLLO 3, 5, 7, 9).
