FIMS 9340   Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums: Issues in the GLAM Sector

Course Description
The GLAM sector comprises Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums; cultural institutions that are united in their focus on serving the public, sharing information, and fostering research and education. This course introduces students to the GLAM sector, exploring cross-sectoral issues and challenges, as well as the local GLAM community in London.

 

This FIMS course is available to MLIS, LIS PhD, MA and PhD Media Studies students.

MLIS students may request inclusion to one of the following Program Content Areas: Information Organization, Curation, and Access; Connecting People with Information; Managing and Working in Information Institutions 

 



Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of readings, assignments, and class participation, students will be able to:
1. Identify and explain how discourses about information and knowledge shape the GLAM sector (program level learning outcome 2);
2. Discuss key commonalities and differences between the institutions that comprise the GLAM sector (program level learning outcome 2); 
3. Create an effective presentation to share a contemporary issue in the GLAM sector with the class (program level learning outcome 9);
4. Identify, explain, and assess the structure and approach of a specific GLAM institution in Southwestern Ontario (program level learning outcomes 5 and 6);
5. Undertake independent research to assess the literature pertaining to a specific topic within the GLAM sector (program level learning outcome 1);
