Course Description
This course examines genealogy as a social, cultural, and commercial phenomenon, while providing students with a basic primer in genealogical research. Topics examined include: locating and evaluating primary sources (e.g. parish and census records); “Genealogy Inc.” and the rise of Ancestry; community formation and genealogical practice; ancestry and nationhood; forensic genealogy; genetic genealogy; Indigenous identity and genealogical practice; popular media and TV shows like “Finding Your Roots” and “Genealogy Roadshow.”
