Course Description
Black Studies in Sight and Sound: An Introduction This course will introduce students to Black Studies theory and practice through the privileging of visual and sonic themes, media, and their related modes of inquiry. Placing a focus on popular culture artifacts (specifically film, music, and contemporary art), students will de- and re-construct the practices of looking, seeing, listening, and hearing in the context of knowledge creation, asking critical questions such as: How do we know what we know about the world? And, what conditions that understanding?

Prerequisites: Registration in fourth year of an Honours Specialization module in FIMS, or permission of the instructor. Note: Enrolment is based on a ballot system which is submitted prior to course registration.
