Course Description

MIT 4030F/G   Special Topics in MIT: Psychoanalysis and the Imaginary Life

Course Description
“Everyone knows that Freud changed everything.” So begins the introduction to a collection of Freud’s writings on The Psychology of Love: “Freud changed everything by making everything about sex.” Our course will take this observation as our subject, which is to say our reading in the field of psychoanalysis will focus on the primacy of what Freud called Eros. We will try to bring the psychoanalytic view of sexuality to bear on a variety of objects: film, dream-life, court transcripts, policy reports, and a graphic novel. Throughout we will seek insight into the question of desire through its representation, through the imaginary.
