Course Description

MIT 3773F-001 (Fall 2015)   Special Topics in MIT: Covering the Periphery: Reporting on the Margins in Canada and Abroad

Course Description
The course takes a critical look at how news organizations in core countries and cities cover stories about issues in international, domestic and non-geographic peripheries. Examples of these include developing countries, the Far North and aboriginal people. In our intimately linked world what happens in the peripheries increasingly matters to people in the core. Journalism plays a critical role in helping us to understand our world, but news organizations consistently do a poor job of informing audiences about issues on the periphery. Those organizations need to, and can, do better.
