Josiane N'tchoreret-Mbiamany: Journalist by Day, Podcaster by Night

Less than a year out of Western University's MMJC program, Josiane is contributing to the news world as a reporter for CBC French services (Radio-Canada) in London, Ontario.

When the COVID-19 pandemic sent Josiane N’tchoreret-Mbiamany home from her first year at the University of Ottawa, she soon realized she needed to find something to do other than watch TV all day. A longtime fan of reality TV, Josiane started working for Silent Podcasts, where she was part of a team posting videos on YouTube and publishing podcast episodes featuring commentaries on competition-based reality shows, such as Big Brother Canada.

Josiane’s interest in potentially working in journalism was sparked by interviewing cast members of various reality shows for the podcast. When she discovered Western’s Master of Media in Journalism and Communication (MMJC) program while wrapping up her undergraduate degree, it seemed like a great next step for her.

“I really wanted to take that jump into journalism,” Josiane recalls. “The MMJC program sounded like a good option because it was allowing me to try journalism and if I decided this isn’t actually what I want to do, then I can still practice and hone my craft in communications.”

Fortunately, journalism proved to be a good option for Josiane. Since graduating from the program in 2025, she has worked as a reporter and editor for CBC London and still podcasts in her spare time. She says she enjoys the opportunity her job gives her to do boots-on-the-ground reporting and connect with members of the community. As she says, “that’s the purpose of local journalism.”

Early in her career, Josiane has already built an impressive resume. She first completed a co-op position as a communications ambassador for Radio-Canada while she was a student at the University of Ottawa, then in the summer prior to her entering the MMJC program, she had a job working as an associate producer on a French film called Et Maintenant?. While she was an MMJC student, she won a 2025 CBC Joan Donaldson Scholarship, which meant she was able to complete the program's required professional internship in paid positions as a Senior Writer with CBC's Digital Radio team in Toronto and as an Associate Producer for CBC's Ottawa Morning in Ottawa. Upon finishing the internship and graduating from the MMJC program, Josiane landed a role as a CBC reporter based in London, Ontario.

While Josiane does not shy away from covering difficult topics, she also understands the news fatigue that people can experience, as she has experienced this firsthand.

“I just feel like the news can be depressing. Part of the reason I got into journalism was to do news that makes people think, diverts them, and that is fun.”

An example of this is a story about Labubus and the blind box craze that Josiane wrote during her internship with CBC. Despite skepticism from older colleagues who were unaware of the internet phenomenon, Josiane was trusted to create the story. It was one of the most successful stories she produced during her internship, even being featured on CBC's homepage.

Looking forward, there is a lot Josiane wants to accomplish. Hosting a show, whether it be in news or reality TV, is a main goal. For now, she wants to continue to hone her skills as a journalist and tell stories that matter.

“I want to be a better journalist. Not for ego, but for the service it provides people. I want to keep giving news and making people feel like they know what’s happening in their community.”
