Destinations & Detours: FIMS Career Conference Recap

On Friday, March 25, The Faculty of Information & Media Studies held its 5th annual career conference for undergraduate students. The ongoing pandemic once again pushed the event online this year, but students and alumni still came together to share tips, ideas, advice and optimism. Students left with a renewed sense of confidence that they will land on their feet as they move onto this next stage of their employment journey.

The conference was funded through the generous financial support of the Undergraduate Student Fund, without which this event wouldn’t be possible. In recognition of the trials and challenges of the past several years, the chosen theme was “Destinations & Detours: No Wrong Moves,” which references how new graduates, pandemic or no pandemic, can expect their futures to take some twists and turns. As Associate Dean Susan Knabe said in her welcome message:

This year’s Career Conference is animated by ideas of travel, both actual and metaphorical, as we imagine emerging from the enforced stasis of the Pandemic, with its travel restrictions, closed boarders, and foreclosed opportunities. It conjures up the detours we've all collectively been obliged to take over the last two years.

The theme also provides us with the opportunity to reflect on the ways in which these global detours have occasioned our own, personal detours, shaping how we think differently, perhaps, about our destinations than we did in 2018 or 2019, when many of you started your journey at Western.

This year the event featured eight breakout speakers and a keynote presenter. Much gratitude to our alumni participants this year. We can’t run this event without you!
