Grad class photos available through new Digital Photo Archive

Grad class of 1974-75By Jasmine Li - current MLIS student

Last fall, the FIMS Graduate Library decided to create a digital photo archive to store and exhibit the FIMS graduating class photos. However, not only was the digital photo archive created for archival purposes, but the library also wanted to ensure the public could easily and quickly access these photos. This special project has been a learning tool for the library's student workers to gain hands-on experience and learn about topics within the LIS discipline.

I had the fortunate opportunity to be assigned this special project the previous fall term, which has contributed to my professional growth as a future LIS professional. This project presented many learning opportunities, such as gaining hands-on experience working with metadata and content management systems and learning about the importance of archiving and web usability. I also discovered an interest in web design while working on this project, influencing me to enroll in LIS 9723 - Web Design and Architecture.

Since the completion of the Digital Photo Archives project, the FIMS Graduate Library is in the process of implementing a new project to create a new website for the library's special collections, as well as assisting with the Smoke Signals Radio Show Archives Project by creating an online platform to archive and allow public access to digital audio of the radio show. These new projects will also become learning tools for future student library workers, allowing them to develop new skills and learn new programs and topics.
