MIT 3954F/G   Special Topics in MIT: The Commodity at the Speed of Light

Course Description
Why has there been six iterations of the iPhone since 2007? Why are commodities made to break? Why have some reality shows had several seasons within a year? What is the link between speed and digital piracy? This course examines the commodity’s acceleration in terms of its production, distribution and consumption through a Marxist-Virilian framework and a series of case studies, including fast fashion, shopping, planned obsolescence in consumer electronics, anticipatory shipping, intermodal transportation, digital piracy and high-frequency financial trading.
