Course Description

MIT 3775F/G   Special Topics in MIT: Bubble, Pop, Electric: Japanese Visual and Technoculture

Course Description
The past decade has witnessed the growing prominence of Japanese cultural goods in the global marketplace. From manga and anime to developments in robotics and mobile technologies, Japan has produced a cultural legacy of innovation and influence. The current influx of what is commonly known as "J-Pop" into the North American mainstream makes it important to consider the cultural context from which these products emerge. This course will explore contemporary Japanese visual and technoculture, and will consider how the Japanese aesthetic is forcing us to rethink our own approach to technology and design in the West.
