Course Description

MIT 3770F/G   Human Rights Reporting: International Legal Standards for the Protection of Journalists

Course Description
This course critically explores the adequacy and enforcement of the international legal framework for the protection ofjoumalists who engage in human rights reporting. By analyzing pertinent international humanitarian and human rights law, we will consider the circumstances in which journalists are protected from violence and the deprivation of their rights as well as circumstances in which such protection may be lost. The course will utilize specific case studies to ground the legal critique. The case studies will deal with situations of international and non-international armed conflict and other potentially dangerous situations not regulated by international humanitarian law such as disputed elections and refugee flows.
