Course Description

MIT 4034F (Fall 2014)   Special Topics in MIT: Theories of Spectacular Culture

Course Description
This course traces the concept of “the spectacular” and situates it within broader debates about representation and the aestheticization of culture and politics. Radical, liberal and conservative critiques of spectacle are examined within the historical context of modernity and post-war consumer culture. Attention is given to debates about spectacular culture’s relationship to social relations of power. Topics include the production of fascist and consumer spectacles and the critique of domination provided by theories of dramatic ritual and cultural performance.
