Course Description

MIT 2189A-001 (Fall 2019)   Special Topics in MIT: Through the Looking Glass: Alternate Realities in Pop Culture

Course Description
One of the most fascinating themes in popular culture are fictions where one or more characters enter an alternate reality where the rules of the game are different, where new material, technological, social or political objects and systems rule the day. Much of the drama in these fictions comes from the hero’s attempt to figure out these new rules. This course will examine a wide series of such fictions in stories, comics, film, and TV shows such as The Matrix, Heroes, The Twilight Zone, Black Mirror, Cowboy Bebop, Waking Life, Electric Dreams, an Alice in Wonderland graphic novel, and stories by PK Dick and HP Lovecraft.
