LIS 9822   Advanced Information Retrieval

Course Description
This course is required for students in the Information Organization & Technologies specialization. Students in the Information & Society specialization may take as an elective. 


Advanced principles and theory of information retrieval (IR). Evaluation of information retrieval systems including classical evaluation studies, evaluation forums and exchanges, and web search engines. Informetric applications in IR. User-centred interactive IR. Visualization for IR. Current topics of interest to the IR community. To succeed in this course, it is strongly recommended that students previously completed GRADLIS 9701 - Information Retrieval: Research and Practice, or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1) Develop an advanced understanding of the theory and principles of information retrieval (Program-level learning outcomes 1,6)
2) Evaluate different types of information retrieval systems (Program-level learning outcomes 1,6)
3) Employ appropriate modeling techniques to describe observed regularities in information retrieval system content and use (Program-level learning outcomes 3,6).
4) Assess interactive information retrieval frameworks and their practical implications (Program-level learning outcomes 1,6).
5) Understand theoretical frameworks of visualization and their applications in information retrieval (Program-level learning outcomes 1,6).
6) Develop a research proposal on a topic in information retrieval (Program-level learning outcomes 2,4).
