Course Description

FIMS 9810   Exploring Youth Studies Research

Course Description
This seminar course is designed for students engaged in or planning to conduct youth research in the context of LIS, Media Studies and other cognate fields. We will examine dominant discourses of adolescence and their effects on the conceptualization of youth in these fields along with consequences for research, policy and professional practice. Teenagers’ and young adult’s own experiences and perceptions will also be considered. We will explicitly cover a variety of methodological approaches to the study of youth in social research. The overarching aim of the course is to problematize the concept of “youth” in our research allowing for complexities and contradictions in the negotiation of what it means to come of age in the media-saturated environments of the 21st century.
