Course Description
This seminar course explores control and freedom in the information age by examining technologies, institutions, representations and practices of surveillance in libraries, archives and databases. It also examines related issues of intellectual freedom, content filtering and copyright management. These topics are investigated through theoretical discussion, case studies, and research presentation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of readings, assignments, and class participation, you will be able to:
1. Independent learning: produce individualized, critical work using WordPress, self-paced
essay assignments, and by facilitating a class discussion of a reading of your choice (PLLO 1);

2. Scholarly breadth: identify and critique professional and scholarly literature and
research data in the field through assigned readings, facilitated discussions, and
WordPress contributions (PLLO 2);

3. Social responsibility and micro-to-macro level thinking: through assigned readings,
facilitated discussions and WordPress contributions you will examine and assess the role
that information professionals play in the legal and ethical challenges that arise around
issues of privacy and knowledge management (PLLO 3, 5);

4. Experiential learning: sharpen your professionalization by facilitating a class discussion
and evaluation about a reading of your choice (should last for 1+ hour) (PLLO 7);

5. Transdisciplinary thought: Become familiar with the theoretical, historical, and practical
perspectives from across a variety of disciplines (ranging from the humanities and social
sciences, to information technology and librarianship). The (syllabus readings set a
framework, but class discussion, your Wordpress contributions, and your essay
assignments will take us beyond the agenda sketched by the syllabus (PLLO 9).
