This course will provide an introduction to scholarly communication with a focus on open access publishing. Students will gain hands-on experience in scholarly publishing processes such as peer review and journal production, in addition to being introduced to behind the scenes issues including funding, promotion, assessing impact, and digital preservation.

Upon successful completion of readings, assignments, and class participation, students will be able to:
1. Analyze LIS research with a more critical eye, informed by peer review expectations (PLLO 1, 2, 9);
2. Become involved in scholarly publishing initiatives and/or pursue their own research with greater clarity surrounding best practices in scholarly communication and publishing (PLLO 1, 2, 7, 9);
3. Articulate the global implications of open access publishing and the role of librarians at various stages of the scholarly communication process (PLLO 3, 7, 9).
