Course Description

FIMS 9855B-001 (Winter 2016)   Social Contexts of Health Information: A Critical Review of Theory and Research

Instructor: N. Wathen

Course Description
In this course we will address the social or ‘relational’ side of information behaviour. Following a brief review of the paradigms that informed early information seeking and retrieval research, we will take a critical look at some new approaches to the study of information behaviour and associated theories, including science and technology studies, social network analysis, psycho-cognitive approaches, social capital theory, and Foucauldian analysis. We will explore the implications of these perspectives for the study of contemporary social issues, particularly those related to health information.
