My current research focuses on the function of social media in the misogynist radicalization of male youth in North American culture. Using psychoanalytic theory as a critical lens, specifically Melanie Klein’s work on projective identification and Donald Winnicott’s study of transitional objects, I am examining how different forms of social media have been mobilized to influence, subjugate, and incite to violence the young men dedicated to the involuntary celibate or “incel” movement in the U.S. and Canada. My goal is to establish a reparative framework of this destructive phenomenon, one that looks beyond illuminating its contours to seek a broader understanding from a position of hope and recovery.
