I have a joint appointment between the Department of Computer Science (Faculty of Science) and the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, where I teach in the MIT and MLIS programs. My research and teaching are cross-disciplinary--at the intersection of computer science, cognitive psychology, education, media and information sciences, human-computer interaction, and knowledge management.

Teaching
The courses I teach for FIMS include MLIS courses in Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning, and Interaction Design and Information Visualization. The former deals with the nature of knowledge and learning as well as organizational processes involved, such as information needs, information seeking, information use, sense making, knowledge creating, and decision making. The latter course deals with the design of interactive and visual information and knowledge spaces-what interaction is, how the mind makes sense of virtual spaces, how metaphors and representations facilitate mental navigation within visual environments, etc. The MIT course I teach is called Design for Interactive Multimedia Learning. This course deals with the elements and processes involved in the design of computer-based multimedia tools to support learning. Some of the topics we discuss in this course include: different theories of learning, different types of multimedia learning environments, how to structure knowledge, how to design interaction, and elements and techniques of screen and presentation design.

The course I teach in Computer Science is Human-Computer Interaction. This course deals with the theories and techniques involved in the conceptualisation, design, implementation, and evaluation of human-centered computational tools.

My current research interests are in:

• Application of cognitive, learning and knowledge sciences to interactive systems design
• Design of computer-based tools to support human thinking, learning, and knowledge processes
• Information, knowledge, and learning architecture and design
• Knowledge and information visualization (including visualization of stories)
• Knowledge management and organizational learning
• Human-computer interaction design
• Integrating multimedia and learning technology (including educational games and tele-learning)
• Investigating interaction between the human mind and technology
