Teaching
I teach critical theory, television studies, and cultural studies of race, gender and sexuality.

Research
My first book, Black, White and In Color: Television and Black Civil Rights (Princeton University Press, 2003) examines television's representation of African Americans' struggles for civil rights and against police brutality. I have served on a number of editorial boards and was for fifteen years a co-editor of Camera Obscura. My research interests have in the past clustered around the operations of race, gender and sexuality in US television, and I continue to work in these areas. I am currently embarking on new research on the utopian potential of the fiber arts and fiber arts communities, with an emphasis on knitting. This new research emerges from my own practice as a knitter, spinner, handweaver and quilter.
