I hold an MLIS and a PhD from the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario. To date, the main focus of my research has been on young people and reading. I studied the modes and methods of access to reading materials as well as social and cultural barriers to such access. Of primary interest were the roles that libraries, bookstores and information communication technologies played in the reading lives of potentially marginalized young people. I conducted to SSHRC supported reading studies, one the examined the role of reading among lesbian, queer and bisexual young women, and the other on the place of reading and libraries among rural and small-town youth. In my enduring "back burner" project I have been looking at the the emergence of the modern Canadian young adult novel and the rise of the teenage reader in Canada. This work was generously supported by the IBBY Canada Frances E. Russell Grant and with SSHRC/Western Travel funding to be able to present findings at international conferences. I am also excited to be lauching a new reading study, one that will investigate the meaning of reading among older adults, this time asking questions about the place that voluntary reading takes up post-retirement. In addition to being a full-time faculty member at FIMS, I am an affiliate member of Women's Studies and Feminist Research at Western, and I am also a Fellow at the Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto. and am a member of the
Language and Literacy Education Research Group.
