2007 Master of Library & Information Science Placement Survey

Of the 145 students who graduated from the Master of Library and Information Science program in 2007, 48 completed the placement survey. This represents an overall response rate of 33.1%. 

Note: The majority of statistics that follow in this report (e.g., type of employment, location, etc.) pertain to those respondents who reported finding employment.

Placement Rate
Of the 48 respondents, 44 reported finding employment. This represents a 92% placement rate. 89% of employed respondents reported working in positions related to the MLIS degree. The majority of respondents are employed in full-time positions (70%).

Types of Placement and Job Assignment
Graduates accepted positions in many different types of organizations, the most common being public libraries (30%) and university or college libraries (26%). The most common primary job assignment reported was reference or information services (30%). 

Salary
Graduates holding full-time positions reported an annual salary range from $30,000 to $76,500. The median full-time salary was $50,000.

Skill or Knowledge Most Influential in Securing Employment
Approximately one third of respondents (30%) identified their co-op experience as the factor that was most helpful in securing employment. Subject specialization was next at nearly 20%.

Location of Placement
All employed respondents reported being employed within Canada, with the majority located in Ontario (72%).

Length of Job Search
Approximately 41% of employed respondents reported finding employment within three months of completing the degree, with an additional 9% within three to six months. Twelve students had secured positions prior to graduation. Within six months after graduation, almost 80% of respondents were employed (not including those who had employment before entering the program).
