Law Librarian
Applications are invited for a four-year term appointment with the University Library at the University of Saskatchewan. We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and flexible individual with the appropriate qualifications and background to work collaboratively as part of the team based at the Law Library, one of our seven branch libraries.
The College of Law has entered into an agreement with Nunavut Arctic College and the Government of Nunavut to provide legal education to a single cohort of students in Iqaluit, Nunavut over a four-year period. The degree awarded will be the existing University of Saskatchewan Juris Doctor (J.D.). The appointee will provide half-time support to the Nunavut Law Program and half-time librarian support in another area (e.g. copyright, government publications, humanities/social sciences). This position involves travel to Iqaluit.
Reporting to the Head of the Law Library, the appointee will have the following responsibilities:
• Providing service and support to the faculty, staff, and students involved in the Juris Doctor Program in Iqaluit, Nunavut. This will involve building strong relationships with the cohort of 25 students in the program, developing and delivering information, research instruction and instructional materials, and providing in-depth research support. Regular travel to Iqaluit is an expectation; the schedule of visits and length of stay will be determined in consultation with the College of Law
• Assisting the Law Librarian supporting the College of Law with the development of collections and information resources to support the Nunavut Law Program
• Providing service and support to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Saskatchewan in another area (e.g. copyright, government publications, humanities/social sciences). This will be based on the needs and priorities of the University Library and the skills/interests of the successful candidate
• Working collaboratively with library employees, faculty, and external partners
• Contributing to library projects and priorities
An ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science degree or equivalent is required for this appointment as is legal research experience, including familiarity with Canadian and international legal research sources. A law degree and experience working with Indigenous peoples, specifically with the Inuit population, are highly desirable.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate:
• A commitment to high quality service
• Understanding of the Canadian legal system, statutes, and case law
• Ability to engage with Indigenous communities and appreciate the significance of Indigenous traditions and knowledge
• Knowledge and understanding of instructional techniques for teaching information literacy skills
• Experience teaching the use of legal information tools
• Experience developing online guides, tutorials, and other instructional materials
• Aptitude and competence in using information technology
• The ability to develop and sustain effective and collaborative professional working relationships and partnerships
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills
• Flexibility and willingness to take initiative
• A deep understanding of, and commitment to, diversity and inclusivity
• Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
The University Library has developed core competencies for librarians at the University of Saskatchewan ( http://library.usask.ca/info/files/CoreCompetenciesUniversityLibrarians2013.pdf ). Our competencies mirror those required by librarians in the Canadian academic research environment, and identify the basic knowledge and skills that librarians should employ in their professional practice.
This appointment is at the rank of Assistant Librarian and the salary range is $77,613 to $93,293. A position with the University of Saskatchewan comes with a benefits package that includes life insurance (compulsory and voluntary), academic long-term disability, sick leave, travel insurance, death benefit, dental plan, extended health and vision care plan, employee assistance program and flexible health spending account. This appointment is until June 30, 2021 and is available on July 1, 2017.
