JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Branch Librarian
Department: Library Services
Position Summary: Responsible for the general management and operations of the Library branch, including assigned specific components of eServices functions.

Responsibilities:
 Oversees the day to day operations of the library branch and programs including all eServices (i.e. website, OPAC, databases, other on-line services, other new technologies.)

 Supervises, oversees and/or directs the activities of branch staff including training, performance evaluation review, staff scheduling, health and safety, and provides recommendations on the hiring/promotion/transfer and discipline/termination decisions.

 Provides training and support to staff on the use of the website, catalogue, other electronic services and new technologies.

 Informs all levels of staff of changes to the website, catalogue, and electronic services.

 Develops and delivers public training/awareness on Library electronic services.

 Provides Director of Library Services/CEO with written proposals and recommendations on programming/services, including digital programming/public training and new on-line resources and services initiatives. When approved, schedules and advertises the program(s), liaises with participants and other staff, sets up rooms/equipment as required, and evaluates the success of the program within the community.

 Responsible for initial troubleshooting on all library branch computers, working with computer& software vendors and/or IT support services as necessary; installs library software, including upgrades, as required; provides technical support pertaining to library projects to library staff and Town partners.

 Reviews catalogues, professional journals and other media and monitors usage for the selection and removal of materials in relevant subject areas, for the approval of the Director of Library Services/CEO, and in compliance with the Board policy for Collection Development.

 Tracks, records and compiles branch, programming and computer-related statistics and reports monthly to the Director of Library Services/CEO.

 Creates pathfinders, displays and other promotional materials to support the library’s services and relevant programming.

 Responds to general and reference enquiries and/or resolves complaints from the public, staff, Members of Council and Library Board.

 Attends circulation desk for the checking in and out of materials as necessary.

 Requisitions supplies, materials and equipment as necessary and makes recommendations to the Director of Library Services/CEO as required.

 Attends meetings, workshops, conferences and courses as required.

 Travels to other branches and outreach destinations (i.e. schools, Club 55, community partners) as required.

 Ensures compliance of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation as follows:

Education and Training:

 Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited library faculty, with specialized courses/experience in computer programming/applications;

Experience:

 Three years’ related experience, preferably in a public library environment;
 Previous supervisory experience;
 One (1) year on the job for the period of adjustment, orientation, and adaptation.

Knowledge:
 Thorough knowledge of library procedures and practices, electronic databases, eBooks/Readers, MS Office applications, web design development tools, and integrated library systems.

Competencies:
 Core Competencies (as per SOLS);
 Management/Leadership, including organizational leadership, laws, policies & procedures, customer service champion, service/department oversight, staff training & development, community relations, marketing;
 Technology core competencies, including a good understanding of hardware, software and operating systems, ILS systems, public access computing, website design and development, digital resource collection development and maintenance, technology planning, policy development, maintenance and training;
 Excellent communication, organizational, customer service, problem solving, planning and interpersonal skills;
 Strong presentation and public speaking skills;
 Valid Class 'G' Driver's license and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business;
 Availability to work weekends and/or evenings and to attend meetings/events as required;
 Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
