Awards & Announcements

Sonya de Laat, Media Studies PhD student, has been awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship for the 2014/15 academic year.

Publications & Presentations

Amy Freier, Media Studies PhD student, presented a paper, "Skin and Bones: Photography as Flesh in the Aftermath of Genocide," at the International Association of Genocide Scholars Conference - Time, Movement, and Space: Genocide Studies and Indigenous Peoples. The conference was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba from July 16-19.

Jen MacGregor, FIMS Postdoctoral Associate, and Nadine Wathen, Associate Professor, published the paper "'My health is not a job': A qualitative exploration of personal health management and imperatives of the 'new public health'" in BMC Public Health.

Gord Nickerson, Lecturer, presented a talk at the North York Central Library on Tuesday, July 8th. The title of the presentation was "Internet Television with XBMC".

Professor Emerita Catherine Ross has a new book on pleasure-reading published in June 2014 by Libraries Unlimited/ ABC-CLIO titled The Pleasures of Reading: A Booklover's Alphabet. The book covers 30 different reading-related topics from Alexia and Bad Reading to Unreadable Books, Vampires, Westerns, and Year of Reading and draws on interviews with avid readers conducted over the years by FIMS MLIS students in her Genres of Fiction and Reading course.

Victoria L. Rubin, Associate Professor, published the following articles:
