If you are seeking an exemption from a University regulation, you must obtain a special permission form from the FIMS Dean’s Office, North Campus Building, Room 240. The Academic Counsellors are responsible for approving special permissions on behalf of the Dean. You require special permission if you are:
- Selecting courses without having the appropriate requisites
- Overloading with more than the maximum number of courses in a given term
- Selecting course(s) that require permission from an instructor, Department or Program
- Selecting more than one course at an affiliated college.
Requisites
Refer to the official up-to-date Academic Calendar to ensure you fulfil any requisites for courses in which you are enrolled. It is your responsibility to be aware of the requirements of your program. If you do not fulfil the requisites for a course and have not obtained special permission from an Academic Counsellor in FIMS, you may be deleted from the course at any time. This decision cannot be appealed. Students who register in MIT courses who have not completed the prerequisites will be deleted before the add/drop period each term and notified by the Registrar's Office of their status.
Overloading
Fall/Winter Session
The normal full-time course load is 5.0 full-course equivalents. If you are taking half courses, the load must be balanced over the two terms so that you are attending no more than five full or half courses at a time. Special permission may be granted for an overload (5.5 or 6.0 courses) if you have maintained high academic standing. Students registered in FIMS who have maintained an overall average of 75.0% in the previous year’s coursework may request to overload. First-year FIMS students may not take a course overload.
Summer Session
You may take a maximum of 3.0 full-course equivalents in the summer. The following conditions apply to the summer session:
- You may take no more than two courses that run concurrently
- If two run concurrently, only one of them may be an honors or lab course
- Only one of the three may be a distance studies course.
Special permissions may be considered for summer overloads if you have an outstanding record.
Selecting Course(s) that Require Permission from the Instructor, Department or Program
If an instructor has given you permission to register for a course without the requisites, submit a special permission form with the instructor and/or Department’s signature to your Academic Counsellor for final approval.
Registering for Courses at an Affiliated College
If you are registered in FIMS, you should try to enrol in courses on main campus if possible. If the course you want is full on main campus or if it conflicts with your timetable, you may request special permission to take it at an affiliated college. The affiliated college may ask to see your special permission form before adding you to the class. You may take a maximum of one full-course equivalent at an affiliated college, if it is not offered on main campus.
