Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Current Western Students

  • How many students are admitted to second year of the MIT program?

MIT is a limited enrolment program. Approximately 250 students will be admitted to second year for 2011-2012:

    • 190 to the modules in Media, Information and Technoculture (MIT),
    • 20 to the modules in Media and the Public Interest (MPI),
    • 40 to the Degree/Diploma Program in Media Theory and Production (MTP).
  • What does limited enrolment mean?

Limited enrolment means that there is more demand for the various programs than spaces available. The number of students that can be accommodated every year in our programs is physically limited by the space available in lectures and labs, the number of courses offered by the program, and the number of professors. In limited enrolment programs, applicants are compared to other applicants until the spaces in the various programs have been filled. Grades are the ONLY tool used to compare students to one another. No resumes, interviews or letters of recommendation are considered. Cut-off grades may vary from one year to the next, depending on the pool of applicants. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee entrance to one of our programs.
  • What are the requirements to continue in an MIT module after first year?

Please review the admission requirements for Major and Honors Specialization modules in MIT in the UWO Academic Calendar. The selection process for admission to the second year of an MIT module is based on a student completing a first year program (5.0 courses), including the MIT first-year prerequisites, by the end of the academic year (April). FIMS calculates a student’s admission average based on the best 4.0 courses (referred to as principal courses), including the three MIT prerequisite courses.
  • If I’m not eligible for admission to MIT, is it possible to “reapply” for third year?

FIMS reserves 10 spaces for upper-year students to transfer into the second year of an MIT module from either another program at Western or another post-secondary institution.   Preference is given to students who have fulfilled Western's MIT first-year prerequisites at the time of admission.  Transfers into second year are based solely on academic qualifications.
