Windows 95, WinGuard and Multimedia Lab
Windows 95 is the operating system used on the workstations in the lab.
With the introduction of Windows 95 students are allotted 5 megs of space mapped to the U drive on our LAN. It is important that this area be monitored so that you do not run out of space. To check the amount of space available on your user area go to http://www.uwo.ca/its/services/email/ and go down to E-mail tools and type in your e-mail name and password. If this amount is exceeded mail sent to you will bounce back to the sender and your communicator directory could become corrupted.
Ask the lab assistants for help as you become familiar with Windows 95 over our network. There are Help Sheets in the Grey Binders and on the GRCs Intranet site (http://intra.fims.uwo.ca/grc.asp ) to assist you as well.
A telnet prompt can be displayed by clicking start, run, and typing telnet in the window or by going to the dos prompt and typing telnet.
When Windows is loaded WinGuard, a virus checker, will scan any disks found in drive A. If a virus is found it will be reported to you. If a virus is reported go to Dr. Solomon's Anti- Virus Toolkit and the virus can be removed from your disk. If you need assistance please ask a lab assistant.
WinGuard only takes seconds to scan your disk for viruses. You may want to make it a practise to place your disk in drive "A" before you log on so that when Windows is loaded your disk is automatically checked for viruses.
The computers in Lab B have slightly bigger screens, CD-ROM drives and sound capability.
Help Binders
Grey Help Binders are available in the computer labs. These binders contain Help Sheets which will provide you with basic instructions for using software on the LAN.
You will also find two green binders in the lab. These binders contain information on how to access UWO Library Systems Electronic resources and Help Sheets on the different resources available.
Disk Care
Although the 3 ½" disks are sturdier than the 5 1/4" floppies they are not indestructible. It is advisable to carry all your disks in protective cases.
Carrying a disk loose can cause the metal plate of a 3 ½" disk to become bent. When this happens it can get caught in the drive mechanisms. This ruins the disk, which means your files are irretrievable, and it is not very good for the drive either.
Make sure that you have a good supply of disks for storing your assignments and other files you may want to save. Always back up your work with a duplicate file stored on a separate disk. Data files can become corrupted, and disks can suffer physical damage, which may cause you to lose important work. Having a backup ensures that you will not lose work in which you have invested significant time and effort.
New Students - Signing Up for Computer Time
Use your mailbox number to sign up for a time slot in the computer lab.
DIALOG PASSWORDS
DIALOG searching is restricted to courses that explicitly need online services. DIALOG passwords will be issued to courses specified by faculty. There will be no general number for other course use.
The classroom use of DIALOG is a privilege accorded to ALA accredited library schools. Each school has been assigned a "cap" on the service. This privilege can be suspended due to misuse. Prepare your searches in advance. Do not compose at the terminal. The Computing Lab Assistants will be monitoring use and if infringements are noted you will be asked to logoff. In addition, the LAN will also monitor amount of time DIALOG is used. If you have any questions regarding this please ask Martie Grof-Iannelli or Marg Sloan.
Labs for September
There are Labs being held each Wednesday and Thursday in the month of September. Labs are on Proquest, Infotrac Databases, Library Literature, Gale Databases, Dialog Web and the Web of Science. Plan on attending some of these labs. Sign-up sheets are available at the GRC circulation/reference desk.
