MLIS student featured in OLA's Access Magazine
An article by MLIS student Vernice Nadine Cherrie-Ann Phillip, "Confessions of a Caribbean Book Packer," appears in the Winter 2008 issue of Access, the magazine of the Ontario Library Association.
Vernice's article appears in the column The Next Generation (pp. 46-47), a regular feature in Access in which students share their perspectives on the library and information community.

Brown Bag Talk: "Virtual Education and FIMS"

This Brown Bag Talk, part of the Future of FIMS series, will feature a roundtable discussion of the topic "Virtual Education and FIMS." Panelists will include Professors James Compton, Tim Craven, and Kate Johnson, and Manager of Computing Services, John Fracasso. The 20-30 minute presentation will be followed by an informal discussion. Bring your lunch!

Public Lecture: "Foucault and the Semantic Web"

Professor Grant Campbell will present a public lecture on the topic "Foucault and the Semantic Web." The lecture has been organized by the LIS Research Cluster on Theoretical Problems in Information Studies: Philosophy, Ethics, Epistemology. Everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be available.
Research News
Professor Lynne McKechnie presented the 2008 Gryphon Lecture at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science on Saturday, March 1. The Gryphon Lecture is hosted annually by the cross-disciplinary Youth Literature Interest Group (YLIG) at the Center for Children's Books, and features a leading scholar in the field of youth literature.
Professor McKechnie's talk, "'Because really they only have a few books I like': Why Reading Teens Don't Use Libraries," described her research on the reported drop in public library use among teens. Her conclusions were based on her interviews with teen readers and inventories of their personal collections of books and other informational media.

Media Studies doctoral student Raúl J. Feliciano Ortiz gave a presentation titled "'Seguramente no sirven': Blogs políticos femeninos y limitaciones estructurales en el ciberespacio" at the Second "Blogfesores" Congress in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on February 8. The presentation provided an overview of the obstacles female political bloggers face for visibility in the top rankings and examined the case of "Blogalaxia," one of the largest blog directories in the Hispanic blogosphere. In addition, Raúl will present a talk titled "'Léanlo que está chévere': Una lectura crítica de los forwards humorísticos puertorriqueños" at the 22nd World Congress on Reading to be held in San José, Costa Rica, July 28-31. Job Posting: FIMS JobWeb Assistant
May - August 2008
This position is open to interested MLIS students.
The JobWeb Assistant posts job advertisements that are received for MLIS and MA Journalism graduates. Responsibilities include preparing job ads for posting, loading the job ads onto the appropriate Web site, and posting job ads on the clipboards located in the Information Commons. Outdated job postings must be removed from the Web sites and clipboards. The JobWeb Assistant may also be asked to work on special projects for the Manager of Graduate Student Services. The position requires some knowledge of HTML Transit. Flexible hours: 5-10 hours a week @ $12.00 per hour.
