Micro Interview with outgoing Acting Dean Nick Dyer-Witheford

Q: Now that you’ve reached the end of your tenure as Acting Dean, how do you feel about the last 12 months?
A: They have been a difficult time for the Faculty. A lot of problems that have been working their way through the university system since the economic crash of 2008 came to a head, principally around budget issues.

Q: What sticks out for you the most about your time as Dean?
A: Despite the tough times, the pleasure of working with a group of FIMS Associate and Assistant Deans, FIMS staff, and faculty who share a genuine work ethic, some fighting spirit and various wicked senses of humour.

Q: What are your plans for the next year?
A: Disappearance; a book to write, some breaks to take.

Q: What issues will be on Dean Carmichael’s front burner when he returns?
A: I imagine a large part of his first month --perhaps longer-- will be taken up with finding where I hid various things in the office.

As of July 1, Professor Dyer-Witheford will be on his own 12-month study leave, during which he will in part be working on his upcoming book Cyber-Proletariat: Global Labour in the Digital Vortex.

Dyer-Witheford is concluding seven years of administrative service for FIMS, including two 3-year terms as Associate Dean, between 2007 and 2013. Upon his return, he is looking forward to returning to his academic roots in teaching and research.

FIMS would like to both welcome back Tom Carmichael, and thank Nick Dyer-Witheford for his many years of hard work and vision in the Dean’s Office.
