Proposal (MS 9603)
Having successfully completed the comprehensive exam, the student is expected to produce a 20-40 page proposal (plus bibliography) of the thesis research. The proposal normally is due no later than the end of the 7th term. The proposal must be approved by the student’s Advisory Committee before work can commence on the thesis. (Current students should consult Guidelines for the Master's and PhD Thesis/Research Proposal in Media Studies on the FIMS Intranet.)
Thesis and Thesis Examination (MS 9604)
Upon approval of the proposal, the student proceeds to undertake the research for the thesis. The completed thesis is approved by the student’s Advisory Committee and the student is permitted to proceed to the examination. For the examination, the student must give a public presentation of the results of the research, following by an oral examination, in accordance with the Guidelines of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS).
School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Thesis Submission Deadlines
To be eligible for convocation and to avoid the need to pay tuition fees in the following term students must meet the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies deadlines for thesis submission and defence, which allow for sufficient time to prepare an examining committee and for examiners to review the thesis.
Specific dates will vary each year so students must confirm dates by consulting the SGPS Doctoral Thesis Regulations or by contacting the FIMS Graduate Programs Assistant.
Sample Time Frame (Spring):
Deadline to Submit a Completed Thesis to FIMS – mid-March
Deadline for Thesis Defence – mid-April
Deadline for Final Submission of the Thesis – late April
There are comparable deadlines in other terms. Students will be required to pay fees until the thesis is successfully defended.
