Course Requirements

    • MS 9601 PhD Interdisciplinary Foundations of Media Theory;

    • MS 9101 Research Methods;

      (Note: Students who have never taken a research methods course at the MA level must take MS 9101. Those who have taken a research methods course at the MA level within the past five years may petition for exemption from MS 9101 or may take the course if they wish to. Exemption from a required course will not reduce the number of courses required by a program.)
    • One required foundational course in advanced theory and method (MS 9600);

    • One course from the student’s primary area of specialization;

    • One course from one of the other two areas of the program;

    • One other elective. (Relevant courses from other Western graduate programs also may be taken as electives.  See the Policy on External Courses.)

    Students may be required to take advanced courses beyond the courses noted above if the faculty advisor/supervisor feels that there are gaps in the student’s breadth or depth of knowledge.

    Normally, courses will be completed by the end of the fourth term of registration. If possible, the foundational mandatory course, MS 9600, will be offered in the first or second term in the program, but in some cases, it may be delayed until the third or fourth term to have a sufficient number of students in the course.
