Major Research Paper Progression Milestones: Part-Time

Students who are not meeting progression milestones may risk funding, may not be allowed to proceed into second year, or may be required to withdraw from the program.

YEAR 1

Fall Term, Year 1

One of:

  • MS 9100: Interdisciplinary Foundations of Media Theory (required)
  • MS 9101: Research Methods (required)

Winter Term, Year 1

  • One or two electives

Summer Term, Year 1

  • One elective (possibly)
  • Selection of MRP Supervisor
  • Meetings with supervisor to discuss MRP topic

YEAR 2

Fall Term, Year 2

  • The remaining required course (MS 9100 or 9101)

Winter Term, Year 2

  • One or two electives

Summer Term, Year 2

  • One elective (possibly)
  • June 15: Final decisions regarding students entering the Major Research Paper option vs. the Thesis option
  • Selection of MRP Supervisor, if not already chosen
  • Meetings with supervisor to discuss MRP topic
  • Research and writing begins on the Major Research Paper

It is the joint responsibility of the student and his/her supervisor to determine appropriate deadlines so that there is sufficient time for the student to receive feedback and make revisions, and so that the student’s work can be reviewed in a timely fashion.

YEAR 3

Fall Term, Year 3

  • MS 9102: Research Workshop (required, for credit)
  • One elective

Winter Term, Year 3

  • Remaining elective(s)
  • MRP writing

Summer Term, Year 3

  • MRP writing

YEAR 4

  • Final writing and editing of the MRP
  • Second reader appointed
  • MRP completed, submitted for evaluation
  • Revisions, if needed
  • Thesis defence to occur no later than the end of Year 4
