Doctoral students are required to complete six courses, including:
9809 – Research Methods
9806 – Statistical Methods
Usually, 9809 is offered in the fall and 9806 is offered in the winter. As the knowledge covered in these courses is often germane to other courses, it is important that students take these courses early in their programs rather than later.
Students may elect to take a course from the doctoral program in Media Studies, one or two relevant one-term courses from other Western graduate programs, and MLIS courses with additional, higher level workload and evaluation criteria. See also the Policy on External Courses.
Students may be required to take advanced courses beyond the courses noted above if the academic advisor or supervisor finds gaps in the student's breadth or depth of knowledge.
