General Requirements Relating to Courses

The following requirements apply to all courses in the Journalism program. In addition, instructors in specific courses may impose additional requirements for completion of the course. All courses are 14 weeks in length, unless otherwise noted.

  1. Students at workEvaluation
The basis upon which students will be evaluated in a course will be specified at the first meeting of the class.
  2. Attendance
Attendance at all classes is mandatory and all absences must be explained to the instructor. There may be penalties for any absence at the discretion of the instructor. Students may fail a course if more than two classes are missed. Students will be excused only for serious illness or emergency. Students must obtain permission of the instructor prior to missing a class, and must notify the instructor immediately regarding any unexpected absence. If more than one class is missed, students must also notify Graduate Student Services. Note: skipping a class in order to meet a production deadline or to complete an assignment for another course is not excusable.
  3. Assignments
Assignments must be submitted on the assigned date. Assignments not filed by the deadline are marked zero, unless a specific extension has been granted. Students may also fail an assignment if it does not meet basic professional standards or if the work contains egregious factual errors. These issues may override other marking criteria and can result in a zero on the assignment. See also: Expectation of writing ability in the journalism program. Current students are advised to consult the Guidelines to the Grade Range in the Graduate Student Handbook.
  4. Plagiarism
Plagiarism, the unacknowledged borrowing of another's words or ideas, is a serious scholastic offence and will result in academic penalties up to and including a failing grade in the course. See the Graduate Student Handbook for more information on plagiarism.
