Policy on External Courses

Master of Arts in Journalism students may obtain transfer of credit for a maximum of one one-term external graduate level course taken while enrolled in the MA in Journalism program, including courses taken in another program at Western or at another university.

Credits may be earned in one of three ways:

  1. Courses in another program at Western
With permission of the Associate Dean, an MAJ student may take one one-term graduate level course from another Western program for credit in the MAJ program.
  2. Courses at another Ontario university
Under the procedures established by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies, a student may continue registration at his/her home university while taking a course offered by another Ontario university. The procedure requires the prior approval of the Deans of the Faculties and the Deans of the Faculties of Graduate Studies of both the host and the home university. The form to request permission (the Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Plan Application) is available from the student forms area of the SPGS Web site. A student classed as a visiting student pays no fees to the host university but will pay the tuition fee to his/her home university.
  3. Courses at a university outside Ontario
A Western student who has been granted formal permission to take appropriate graduate level courses outside Ontario may request advanced standing for academic work done at that institution toward the University of Western Ontario degree program. This request must be made before leaving Western. Permission to attend the other institution must be arranged with the program concerned and the School o Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The student will be required to pay tuition at both institutions.
