Awards & Accomplishments


Dr. Keren Dali has been chosen as an Outstanding Reviewer for Reference Services Review in the 2015 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence. The complete list of winners is available online.

Melissa KargiannakisAfter a whirlwind of activity over the last year, Queen's Young Leaders Award recipient Melissa Kargiannakis traveled to England to collect her award and meet the Queen this summer. Many other high profile guests were on hand for the ceremony, including David Beckham and Steve McQueen. A photo and video clip of the event are available on the FIMS website.

Liwen VaughanProfessor Liwen Vaughan's paper "Firm web visibility and its business value," which was published in Internet Research, was selected as a Highly Commended Paper of 2014. Emerald, the publisher of Internet Research, will present Professor Vaughan with a certificate of Awards for Excellence. The study was part of Professor Vaughan's SSHRC-funded research program on web data mining for business intelligence. The paper was co-authored with Dr. Fang Wang of Laurier School of Business and Economics, Wilfrid Laurier University.

At the end of the summer 2015 term, the MLISSC announced the nominees and winners of their Spirit of Librarianship and Fantastic FIMS awards. Congratulations to Nikola Mitrovic (winner of the Spirt of Librarianship award) and Lynne McKechnie (Fantastic FIMS Award). Congratulations also go to the other nominees: Eilidh MacConnell, Angel Kwok, Stacey Lapp, Sandra Harhum, Kristyn Seanor (Spirit); and Nadine Wathen, Sharron Smith, and Isola Ajiferuke (Fantastic FIMS).

Sandra Smeltzer, Associate Professor, has been named of one of three new Teaching Support Centre Fellows. Smeltzer will create a community of practice for faculty members interested in enriching current international service learning and research. Part of her plans include coordinating workshops at FIMS, organizing a university-wide conference on service learning, and developing user-friendly online and in-person resources about international service learning. She will also develop a new theory/praxis seminar course for FIMS, and conduct research about the intersection of service learning and the field of media studies/communications.

datejie greenDatejie Green served as the 2015 FIMS Asper Fellow (formerly CanWest Global Fellowship) during the fall term. Green holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from York University, and her professional background is in radio journalism, including producing feature interviews for CBC’s “As It Happens” and “The Current.” Her stories for the latter range from an examination of news coverage of Rwanda and Zaire (now The Democratic Republic of the Congo) in the Clinton years, to considerations of women’s rights in Iraq, and racism in the Canadian public service. She has also published or presented on refugees in Canada, LGBTQ health, assisted human reproduction and the LGBTQ community, and on liberation movements in the Sudan.
 
More recently, she has worked as an organizer for the Canadian Media Guild, where she has focused on the precarious circumstance of freelance professionals in media and creative communications.  She has presented at a number of meetings on various aspects of this work.

Liam Young, Media Studies PhD'15 and former FIMS lecturer, took a position this fall as Assistant Professor of Media Studies (LTA) in the Department of Cultural Studies at Trent University.

Professor Edward Comor's "Digital Prosumption and Alienation" (originally published in 2010) was included in an exhibition titled Prosu(u)mer at the Estonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Tallinn. The exhibition runs until October 18.
