As 17-year-old Randy Horst prepares to go out for the night, his mom says, "maybe you should take the Rendezvous and fill 'er up with gas." If Randy's parents wanted to do the same thing at his age, they had to prepare the horse and buggy.
Willis and Erma Horst were raised in an
Old Order Mennonite community, where cars and other modern conveniences were prohibited.
Like the Horsts, other Mennonite families who grew up with similar restrictions have also adopted a more modern lifestyle. Joannna Steckle and her family is one of them. She says "there's just too much involved in life when the horse just doesn't cut it."
Although both families have followed a similar path away from the Old Order, each has a unique story to tell. |
